Similar in appearance to the Yokohama pumpkin, the Black Futsu is another Japanese heirloom with some distinct differences. The Black Futsu will start off a deep intense green almost black color and will ripen to a bright solid tawny bluish-blush color with a white bloom on the surface, giving it a frosty appearance ( similar to the Autumn frost pumpkin). The skin is edible unlike the Yokohama, and the size is much larger, almost that of a medium-sized pumpkin..The flesh is nutty, earthy, and fruity and there is no peeling required for preparation. The Black Futsu is best served sliced thin and raw, pickled, or simply roasted..Vines are medium so they are ideal for smaller gardens.
