I bought these hoping to use them for meal jars because they were less costly than Ball jars. Two problems: the glass isn't microwave safe, so anything that needs to be heated is out. Second, the lids close, but they don't seal. I tried two of them with water and shaking resulted in side spray from both. This won't work for jar salads or soups that need to be shaken first. I'll use the two I washed for food storage (and return the other eight), but I'll be spending the money on real food jars for what I need. Don't buy these if you expect to use them for more than decoration.
